Your city.
Your way.

We forge connections between Hamburg’s different types of sustainable mobility options. Cycling is an important element of that – in combination with bus and rail and walking. We ensure that you can combine all three the most efficient way and find cycling offers where you need them – in your neighbourhood, at your station, at your destination.

That is how we make the path into the goal!

Radkultur Hamburg is an invitation to you to experience Hamburg “from the saddle” and while you are doing it, to become part of a community which eagerly embraces the urban lifestyle. We stand for a bike-friendly Hamburg and create value-added options of many kinds for everyone.

Who are the people behind the brand name
“Radkultur Hamburg”?

Behind our brand name is the organization Hamburger Bündnis für den Rad- und Fußverkehr (Hamburg Alliance for cycling and walking). A total of 28 public partners joined forces in this alliance in 2022 with the goal of agreeing measures for the systematic promotion of getting around by bike and on foot.

The Bündnis für den Rad- und Fußverkehr comprises Hamburg‘s cycling strategy with the goal of binding together even more closely the network of the so-called “Umweltverbund” (environmental alliance) consisting of cycling, walking and public transport and taking it forward jointly. Radkultur Hamburg is officially represented by the Behörde für Verkehr und Mobilitätswende (Ministry of Transport and Mobility Transition).

Looking ahead, Radkultur Hamburg will provide a common communicative framework and a unified brand image for the public sector cycling options on offer in Hamburg.

Hamburg’s mobility transformation
is picking up speed

Hamburg is well on its way to redefining mobility in new and sustainable ways. The 2022 Hamburg mobility survey shows that 68 percent of all journeys in the city in 2022 were made on foot, by bike or by public transport. That is four percentage points up on the figures from 2017. And the greatest increase is in journeys by bike. The importance of cycling as an everyday means of transport has been steadily growing in Hamburg for years. This development is not just a passing fad but a symptom of a society in flux.

And that is no big surprise: cycling is healthy, flexible, cheap and often fast – and it improves the living quality in the city, by reducing noise and exhaust fumes as well as reducing the consumption of space resources. But it is not only cycling itself which has numerous advantages, but our city also already offers you excellent preconditions, with its flat roads, the compact city centre, easily accessible community centres and very varied offers for cyclists.

And that is where we come in: under the brand name Radkultur Hamburg, the lifestyle of the mobility transformation meets the options available in our cycling city. We bundle together all the offers for cyclists and present them where you can see them at a glance.

Time to start the wheels turning:
Hamburg’s target for 2030

The target is clear: by 2023, 80 percent of all journeys in Hamburg should be made in the so-called environmental alliance – i.e., on foot, by bike or by bus and train. Because these three forms of getting around sustainably must be thought of as a whole to advance the mobility transformation. To achieve this, everyone and all districts of the city should profit equally from the expansion of the cycling city and the options it offers.

Over the city boundaries, too, the towns in the surrounding metropolitan region should be more easily reachable by bike. On top of this, cycle paths all over the city are being renewed and more facilities for parking bikes are being created.
